This situations reminds me when desktop computers made "designers" out of everyone who had access to PageMaker and a laser printer. But experienced design professionals didn't go away, and there's still a place for desktop publishers.

My thought is: Bloggers are not necessarily professional Writers/Editors/Food Critics. So it's not accurate to compare the two. Apples and oranges.

Bloggers are (regular) folks who share their passion for food, DIY projects, or what-have-ya. Does that make them a professional? No. But does that mean they shouldn't have a place at the table? No.

While I understand your disdain, I don't think you have anything to worry about in the long run. The public and restaurants will always need the experienced and knowledgeable professional. But the public and restaurants also need bloggers as well, but in a different way. Bloggers allow everyone (me included) to connect, to join the conversation and feel like their opinions matter and are as valid—be it a little unqualified. I enjoy reading blog entries from both the amateurs and the pros. Right now, there's a place for both. Time will tell who will last though.

Rona, this is a terrific post and I say GOOD ON YA for writing it. So here's something: I was recently at a food and wine festival here in France. Yes, as a journalist, on assignment, for a print publication, that will pay me for my work. There was a woman standing with a group of chefs I was talking to so I put out my hand and said "Hi. I'm Julie." She said "hi, I'm ___." I said "Nice to meet you" and offered my card. She did not offer hers. I asked what she did and she told me "I write." I said "What do you write about?" and she said "Food." By then I had already had enough of her so I said "Do you have a card"? and she said: "I don't carry cards. Tweet me." Why didn't I reply "bite me"? What does one even say about that? If I were the editor of a major food magazine, or a cookbook editor, might she have come up with a card do you suppose? Later I was told she has a popular food blog. It's tempting to say "she'll be sorry" or "she's an idiot" but I fear she won't and she isn't. The End.

I agree that band camp is no picnic! My kids completed their band camp in South Carolina and the environmental conditions were extreme, especially this year. At least they were able to experience comfortable accommodations after spending the day out in the sun and humidity!

I too would recommend that your bathroom remodel include those aspects which you embrace. That is, if you would like to have wallpaper, pink flamingos, etc., then you should! You and your family are the folks that have to live with the remodel, so you should definitely please yourself and forget everyone else.

Rona, you may (I said "may") want to start not worrying about what others think and say about you, your family and your house. You are a good person with tastes of your own. You are smart, thoughtful and well-meaning. Do what YOU want, what YOU feel, what floats YOUR boat. If others like it...great. If they don't...so what. Those who love you, love you for the real you. You have one life to live. Live it your way.

I'm here to tell you that WALLPAPER IS MAKING A COME-BACK!!! while being a lookie-loo at several model home developments, I noticed they used wallpaper on at least one room in every house I visited!!! Sometimes as an accent wall in living or dining room, sometimes whole rooms (bathrooms!) I say FOLLOW YOUR HEART!!! Go for wallpaper!!!
